About This Event

Audio Engineering for Voice Actors - Session 1

Event Summary

Contents Welcome to AE4VA!

I’m not going to go overboard with my post-class notes, because I think we covered everything that was needed during the class - so for those who weren’t able to join us during the class, I highly suggest that you watch the video before getting ahead of yourself!

Getting in touch with Tony or Neth

We see this as a ‘mentorship’, not just a six week class, so feel free to keep in touch with us past the end of this course!

Depending on your preference, you can send us an email or message on Discord (or chat with us in the #audio_eng_4va class channel in the school Discord - we’re around most days) - and we’ll get back to you as soon as we are able.

Tony - [email protected] - or Discord = Crash#8415

Neth - [email protected] - or Discord = TheNeth#5874

  • TA Support calls with Neth - https://bit.ly/cc-tasupport
    • If you have issues with hardware, sound treatment, the class materials, or using REAPER, I am quite happy to find a mutually beneficial time for us to jump into a Zoom call and get things sorted out.

Class Slides & Other Assorted Assets

If you would like to glance ahead at what we’ll be covering over the next few weeks, I’ve prepared a ‘course syllabus’, which you can grab here: https://bit.ly/CC-AE4VA-Syllabus

You can also download a copy of the slides we use each week, in both PowerPoint and PDF formats, from here: https://bit.ly/AE4VA-slides

  • Included in the Google Drive folder that the above link to the slides takes you to are a bunch of assorted assets that I’ve gathered in one place, to make it relatively easy for you to save/bookmark one link to save all this stuff from, (and also for myself in managing just a single folder across cohorts haha)
  • You’ll find things like:
    • Neth’s Original 12 Week Notes from the 2020 version of this class before it was reduced to six weeks;
    • "Loudness Explained" - A document I wrote that gave a bit more detail to try to explain key terms used to measure the volume (or loudness) of audio;
    • Slides from the “All About Microphones” event that Neth runs periodically with Burger;
    • Plugin Resources & Recommendations - the best part of the slides from the Plugins event Neth runs periodically with Burger;
    • A text file containing a list of Royalty Free Music & SFX websites;
    • and more!

Regarding Homework

Firstly, the homework for Week 1 is to just send through to us a sample of your home recording space - whether you have a booth, a room converted to a studio, a closet, or you’re yet to create/treat a dedicate space. You can download a copy of the guide that Neth & Tony created from the asset folder above, or by using this specific link: https://bit.ly/cc-homeSoundTest

Secondly, the next six weeks is going to absolutely fly by! PLEASE don’t stress yourself out trying to get our homework done and handed in before the next class; while some classes DO require you to do weekly homework, Tony and I see this as an ongoing mentorship whereby you can keep in touch with us and reach out long after the class has finished. In this way, you could contact us for feedback or advice in two months or even two years, and we’ll happily help you out.

We’ve had students take this class who had to move house half-way through, or were not able to attend the classes live and so missed out on direct interaction with us, etc. and this is why we feel it is so important for us to remain open to working with you all - especially with such potentially complicated subject matter as Audio Engineering.

Note: We will do our very best to get back to everyone as quickly as possible, but as Tony is a parent and still works a day job and Neth is assisting with several other classes, our replies may take a day-or-two. We thank you for understanding.

Further Note: Our homework submission link is a Dropbox folder that Tony owns, and both he and Neth maintain - you can find the link at the top of each week's event page, or bookmark this link: https://www.dropbox.com/request/lLTzlnsqeiv1EzdkAXUn

Quick Zoom Tip re: Tony’s Ultra-Wide Monitors

When Tony gives us practical examples of things in REAPER or Studio One, etc. it can be a bit hard to see smaller details in the Zoom meeting sometimes, especially when he is sharing his whole screen, so I recorded this quick video to help you change Zoom’s view settings while you’re in class: https://bit.ly/ZoomViewSettings

Regarding REAPER

As I mentioned a couple of times in class this week, I’ll try to figure out a couple of times for us to meet between classes as we go along, just to answer questions and go over some basics of using REAPER.

In the meantime, however, the free resources below are some of the best that already exist - and in some ways can explain things a bit better than I can (though I know some folks learn better in an interactive environment rather than from a pre-recorded video)

Note: The notes below are slightly adapted from the notes I’ve prepared for when I finally upload my “Exploring REAPER with Neth” event video… (Psst! Grab the slides I used for that event in the meantime!)

Official REAPER Videos - https://www.reaper.fm/videos.php

  • These are all created by Kenny Gioia - the guy that runs probably the best & most comprehensive YouTube channel; REAPER Mania
  • Keep in mind that a lot of what Kenny demonstrates in his videos relates to music production / mixing, but a lot of his explanations can be great to just learn about REAPER generally.
    • He has a playlist called “This is REAPER 6” on his channel for some time which he recently updated to make sure all the information was as up-to-date and accurate as possible.
    • Late last year (2022) he also set up a three-part video series called “First Settings to Adjust in REAPER” which in itself can be a fantastic resource to just learn about what things are called, where certain settings are relating to them, and a whole bunch of other things.

Mike DelGaudio’s Booth Junkie YouTube channel is one you should bookmark, not only for his gear review & interviews, but also for his REAPER-specific videos that he makes occasionally.

Reverb Examples & "Impulse Response"

When we got to the part in the class slides about the concept of 'reverberation' (or "reverb"), some folk weren't quite able to grasp what it meant from our descriptions and so we jumped into a couple of quick practical examples. You can watch this at the 1hr 7min 32sec mark.

Neth also shared a link to an excellent video: How To Create Your Own Impulse Response For FREE! from "Free To Use Sounds" YouTube Channel - (Neth loves Marcel & Libby's channel & work!) - Watch this video here: https://youtu.be/dHYI_gdpz-4
